The Dirty Bird Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do some septic systems need a vent?

A: Vents, when required are usually found at the end of a leaching field. These vents allow for the exchange of gases both in and out of the underground system to help promote good bacteria growth, which helps break down the waste.

Q: Can you cut your pipe?

A: Yes, as long as you replace the part that you cut off with something as good as or more functional than what was originally there.

Q: Does it meet codes and regulations?

A: Yes, The Dirty Bird has been engineered to meet or exceed all current regulations. The Dirty Bird comes standard with a charcoal odor control filter.

Q: Where does it vent and does it restrict flow?

A: The bottom surface of the pedestal has a series of venting holes. These vents are designed to have a combined area that is more than that of the cross-sectional area of a standard 4″ PVC vent pipe. The location also helps to prevent rain and foreign objects from entering the septic system.

Q: Are the filters required on all systems?

A: In MA, for instance, odor-controlling filters are required on a town-by-town basis. A lot of towns already require filters and more are following suit.

Q: How long does the filter last?

A: The original filter is warranted against saturation for one year. There are a lot more factors that can affect the life span of the filter, such as system size, household usage, etc. Although there are no current regulations that require filter replacement, we recommend servicing the filter every three years to maintain maximum odor control.

Q: Is the filter serviceable?

A: Yes, the filter service kit includes everything that is needed for easy do-it-yourself service. The kit comes with four new filter elements, all new stainless steel hardware and instructions. The kit can be purchased on-line.

Q: What is it made of?

A: The Dirty Bird is molded of Polyethylene, an extremely durable material that is commonly used for many consumer products. This material is more durable than the PVC vent pipe that is currently used in septic systems.

Q: What colors are available?

A: The Dirty Bird is molded in three colors: Granite, Sand Stone and Terra Cotta.

Q: Will the color fade?

A: Ultra violet stabilizers are added to the plastic in the molding process for fade resistance.

Q: Can you paint The Dirty Bird?

A: The material that The Dirty Bird is made of repels most dirt and stains, and due to this quality, it does not accept paint well.

Q: Will it blow off the pipe?

A: The patented slide over-tapered fit design of The Dirty Bird securely grabs the PVC vent pipe, which results in excellent stability.

Q: Can snow harm my Dirty Bird or block the vents?

A: Due to the design and shape of The Dirty Bird, the snow will not pile up underneath and block the vents, which makes this a product that works in all climates and in all weather conditions.

Q: What is AIRVAC?

A: AIRVAC is a air inlet for a vacuum sewer system. This system will have multiple homes linked to it. This is not intended for use on a private septic system.

Q: Why do I have a AIRVAC air inlet?

A: For a vacuum break that is located between the holding tank and the main line located under the road.

Q: Do I have to use the bird bath topper?

A: No, it is included in every purchase but that is solely for the birds. All the venting occurs in the pedestal.

Q: What if my pipe is crooked?

A: No problem, The Dirty Bird is designed to fit over imperfect pipes.
